Solana Alpenglow Upgrade Passes with 98% Support, Paving Way for ~150ms Finality

The Solana community has overwhelmingly approved the Alpenglow upgrade, clearing the way for a major consensus change intended to deliver near-instant transaction finality.

On Sept. 2, 2025, 98.27% of SOL stakers who voted supported the proposal, 1.05% voted against and 0.36% abstained. In total, 52% of the network’s stake participated in the governance vote, according to Solana Status. The result ends the governance phase for SIMD-0326 and signals broad validator and delegator backing for the plan.

Alpenglow replaces two core components of Solana’s current design — Proof‑of‑History and TowerBFT — with new consensus primitives. It introduces Votor, a new voting and finality mechanism that aims to shrink confirmation times from more than 12 seconds to roughly 150 milliseconds, and Rotor, a follow‑on feature designed to cut redundant data transfers between validators. Together these changes target faster confirmations, lower bandwidth demands and improved scalability for high‑throughput applications.

Deployment will likely follow a staged approach: testnet rollouts, shadow forks and a coordinated mainnet activation once validators and client teams confirm readiness. Rotor is slated for a later phase, meaning the initial benefits will come from Votor’s faster finality while extra efficiency gains arrive as Rotor is deployed.

Why this matters: reduced finality times can dramatically improve user experience and composability for decentralized finance (DeFi), blockchain games and other real‑time apps that depend on quick confirmations. Less inter‑validator data exchange also makes operating validators more efficient, lowering barriers for nodes in busy networks and enabling more resilient infrastructure.

Next steps: with governance approval in hand, Solana developers and validators will coordinate the upgrade rollout and activation schedule. That process requires careful testing and synchronized upgrades across the validator set to avoid chain splits or service disruptions. Exchanges and major wallets will likely announce maintenance plans ahead of activation to protect user funds.
